 Environmental impact assessment of mineral resources planning for Jiangsu Province based on GIS

Abstract

 With the rapid increase in demand for mineral resources induced by the fast development of economy, it is becoming more and more important to coordinate the relationship among mineral exploration, exploitation and
environmental protection. To abate the environmental impact caused by the mineral exploitation, one of the most important means is to assess environmental impact of mineral resources planning. The method for environmental
impact assessment of mineral resources planning using GIS is proposed in this research. The identification and selection of environmental impact factors are introduced first, and then the system for environmental impact
assessment is set up in this search. In this paper, taking the second round of environmental impact assessment of mineral resources planning for Jiangsu Province as example, the approach is introduced in detail. Through spatial
analysis method provided by ArcGIS software, the environmental impact of mineral resources planning to ecological environment, geological environment, water environment, atmospheric environment and acoustic environment is
given quantitatively. Based on the result of environmental impact assessment of mineral resources planning for Jiangsu Province, some valuable suggestions are also given. T he application shows that GIS is a very practical and
efficient method in environmental impact assessment of mineral resources planning. It can provide reasonable analysis processes, quantitative and visual results, which makes the environmental impact assessment more scientific.
