Abstract: The study of nucleon spin structure is a hot problem of Quantum Chromodynamics. In recent progress of this research the problem of whether the momentum and angular momentum operators of a gauge field system need to be gaugeinvariant has attracted the attention of many researchers. We study a class of operator gauge transformation in covariantly quantized free electromagnetic field theory to pursue the possible understanding of this physical problem. We make much discussion on the nature and physical implication of this new operator gauge transformation at the level of both classical theory and quantum theory. We obtain some new results. These new results are physically meaningful in their own right and are not discussed in usual textbooks of field theory.Based on this discussion,we analyze the problem of gauge invariance of energy momentum operator and angular momentum operator of free electromagnetic theory and obtain some physically meaningful understanding of this problem.
